Homemade Garlic Naan

Homemade Garlic Naan

We make a lot of vindaloo and hot curries, but we normally go the easy route and buy naan from the store. Every time we’ve taken it out of the oven we say “next time let’s make our own garlic naan.” This time we finally did. The recipe we used was quite easy; we looked at a few different recipes, but some required the bread to sit over night. (No one has time for that!) The recipe I decided to use came from www.kitchme.com; the recipe is simple, has minimal ingredients, and looked delicious. We made vindaloo to go with our garlic naan, and that turned out amazing as well. We didn’t take any pictures of just the vindaloo so we’ll post that recipe after we make it again. It was delicious so I suspect that will be very soon (and hopefully we won’t finish it so fast!).

Our first experience making our own garlic naan was a huge success, I can’t imagine us ever buying store naan again.

Homemade Garlic Naan

  • Prep time:
  • Cook time:
  • Total time:
  • Yield: 14
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Recipe type: side

Ingredients:

  • 1 package (.25 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tbs milk (I used whole milk)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 4 1/2 cup bread flour
  • 2 tsp garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand for about 10 minutes until frothy. Stir in sugar, milk, egg, salt, and enough flour to make a soft dough. I used almost a full 4 1/2 cups.
  2. Knead for 6 to 8 minutes on a lightly floured surface or until smooth. Place dough in a well oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and set aside to rise. About an hour. The dough will have doubled in size.
  3. Punch down dough and knead in garlic. Pinch off small handfuls of dough about the size of a golf ball. Place rolled balls on to a tray and cover with a dry towel and allow it to rise again, about another 30 minutes.
  4. While the naan is rising the second time, start grill to high heat.
  5. Roll out balls of dough out into a thin circle. Lightly oil grill. Place dough on the grill and cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until puffy and lightly browned. Brush uncooked side with butter and turn over. Brush the uncooked side with butter and cook until browned. Another 2 to 4 minutes. Remove from grill and continue the process until all of the naan has been prepared.
