As the youth service coordinator for the library I plan the Summer Reading Program events that we have. The reading program is an incentive to help encourage children to read every day by awarding prizes and having special events throughout the summer. We’ve had many special programs so far but this week we are having my personal favorite, ‘Kids in the Kitchen’. This year’s summer reading theme is “Dig into Reading” and when I think of digging, I think of dirt. When combining kids cooking and dirt I think, OREO Dirt Cups. The kids will work together to make the pudding and while it is chilling they will get a mini kitchen lesson and then do a small worm craft. Once the pudding is ready they can crush up their OREO’s and add their worms. One of my co-workers made chocolate crispy bugs to add on top (so good and thank you!!).
This is a really quick and simple recipe that is fun to do with kids of all ages and any size group!
OREO Dirt Cups
Ingredients:
- 1 box chocolate pudding
- 3 cups of 2% milk
- 1 package of OREO cookies
- 1 package of gummy worms
Directions:
- Following the directions on the back of the pudding box, whisk together 1 package of pudding mix with 3 cups of cold milk until well blended. Refrigerate for 45 minutes or until set.
- While the pudding is chilling, crush up the OREO’s.
- Once pudding is set you can start making your dirt cup. Spoon in the chocolate pudding on the first layer, then add some crushed OREO’s and more pudding. Put gummy worms on top (or wherever you like)
