Tuesday night “The Taste” was pushed back to 9 o’clock so the new show “Celebrity Wife Swap” could premier. Really, celebrity wife swap. How about a new cooking show, I could think of a lot of concepts better than wife swapping with B list celebrities. I could go on about the stupidity of the TV shows out there now, but I would rather talk about Tuesday night’s “The Taste”
As you already know the contestants compete in a team challenge. The winning team receives help from the guest judges and the cook that prepared the winning spoon has immunity in the solo challenge.
I do not think I could of competed this week with the theme being: Offal, aka entrails, aka organ meat aka gross. I’ve never eaten it and have no clue how to prepare it. The guest judges this week are Frederic Morin and Dave McMillan from Montreal’s Joe Beef. The teams were given a list of different pig entrails by the mentors; who helped their kitchen prepare a spoon for the team challenge.
During the team challenge; Ludo ran around the stage with pig’s blood on his hands, and “mentored” Sarah very closely. Bourdain helped Diane use a sawzall to cut through a bone and Nigella introduced testicles to Lauren. With only a few minutes remaining, Gregg decides to turn up the temperature on the pressure cooker. A second later the top explodes off sending boiling water and pig brains everywhere. I secretly hoped this would ruin his headcheese, but it didn’t. The spoons chosen to be judged by Morin and MacMillan were: Uno, Lauren, Kristainne, and for the third week in a row, Gregg. Unfortunately it was Gregg who won the immunity, and Ludo’s team had help from the guest judges during the solo challenge. Before the clock began, the judges told the contestants “it’s not about winning tonight, it’s about not losing.”
In the solo challenge the contestants were to use the remaining entrails to prepare their dish. Some of the popular protein cuts included sweetbreads (thymus), testicles, tripe, cheeks and ears. Yum. There was some entertainment while the cooks made their dishes. Diane has a new nemesis, Lauren, who she does a spot on impression of. (Don’t get me wrong, I like Lauren, she made chocolate cake for her audition) Gregg manages to cut off part of his finger and one of the guest judges has him bite a wooden spoon to help with the pain.
When the two hours were up, the cooks submitted their spoons and waited for the judges. Gregg was very lucky to have immunity again this week; his pho probably would have gotten him sent home. The judges chose their favorite and least favorite dishes of the night. Kristianne’s cauliflower mousseline with sweetbreads was the favorite of both Nigella and Malarkey. Ludo chose Jeff from Malarkey’s team as his favorite again this week and Bourdain chose Uno’s fried fish heads as his favorite. Which is surprising because Uno’s fish heads were chosen as Ludo’s least favorite dish. Uno receives a gold and a red star, something that has never happened before. Other red star receivers were Lauren, Adam, and Nina Marie.
The judges then deliberated on which three out of the four would be sent home that night. They all agreed on Adam and Nina Marie, but they could not come to an agreement on whether Lauren or Uno deserved to continue into the next round. It was addressed that Uno’s fish heads did not fulfill the challenge because technically fish heads are not offal. Lauren got extremely lucky and Uno was the third cook sent home.
Next week seven contestants compete, the theme being “Seduction”, but only four will continue to the finale.
I think the final four will be Gregg, Kristianne, Jeff and Diane, but we will see come next week.
